Uncertainty Is A Part Of Life

Uncertainty is a part of life–It is present in most tasks that require intelligent behavior, such as planning, reasoning, problem solving, and decision making. It is all around us –Yet as human beings, we crave security. We want to feel safe and have a sense of control over our lives. Contrarily, many things remain outside our control. When uncertainty is not navigated properly, it can drain people emotionally with endless “what-ifs” and “worst-case scenarios”. On the other hand, it can be used as a catalyst for growth and inspiration. Ultimately, Mindset is key to coping with difficult circumstances and confidently facing the unknown. Use these 3 simple strategies in your life to embrace uncertainty:

First, Take Action Over The Things You Can Control

While you can’t control the recovery of the economy, you can take the necessary steps to feel confident in the financial decisions you make today. Additionally, you can’t control the weather– but you can invest in insurance to support whatever nature throws your way. Whatever your fears or personal circumstances, instead of worrying about the uncontrollable, try to refocus your mind on take action over the aspects that are within your control.

For example, if you’re worried about your health or a recent diagnosis, you can still take action by lowering your stress levels, reaching out to loved ones for support, and managing your symptoms. By focusing on the aspects of a problem that you can control in this way, you’ll switch from ineffective worrying and ruminating into active problem-solving. Of course, all circumstances are different and you may find that in some situations all you can control is your attitude and emotional response.

Second, Actively Deal With Your Emotions

One way to actively deal with your emotions is to practice nonjudgmental awareness. Nonjudgemental awareness is a key aspect of mindfulness which involves acceptance and non-judgement of our present moment experiences. This includes accepting our thoughts and feelings—whether positive or negative—and immersing ourselves in the present moment without evaluating it. Nonjudgemental awareness can be achieved through meditation. You witness your emotions passing and it’s a lot easier than you might think. Simply taking five to ten minutes a day to notice what your body and mind feel like can help you gain an understanding of your emotional habits.

Sit in a comfortable seated position and close your eyes. Take 10 deep breathes, in and out through the nose. Pay close attention to any emotions that may arise and how your instinct tells you to respond. Ask yourself:

  • What kind of emotions arise, and how often do they come?
  • How does your body feel when they arise?
  • How does your mind respond?
  • Is that response helpful? Is there a better way to respond?

Be grateful for these discoveries! Simply your awareness has the power to bring about great change.

Third, Clear Your Mind & Revisit Your Goals

After your meditation– with a clear mind, revisit your goals. Perhaps, when it comes to money stress and the current uncertainty with things costing more, you can now remember to focus on the present moment and what you can control.
